Great Si-Fi book. This will keep you on your toes as you struggle with Vance Coreman in his fight for knowledge.

I was fully engaged from the first page through to the end. It was so much fun investigating this mystery (or mysteries?) with Vance Coreman and Ms. Doolittle. Mystery, adventure, good characters, more mystery, sly jokes, etc...

The story starts as fantastical-yet-modest mystery, but quickly expands to much more. Every new detail we learn of Vance's predicament makes us more curious to find answers along with him. The story is surprisingly intricate but never feels complex.

The description of the book doesn't do it justice, I think. I was thrown off initially by the description of the character waking up with no memory in a bathtub. But, it actually works. The character lives in a world like a video game simulation with magic. He's learning the rules, quickly, but there's certainly a sense of panic that he won't learn things fast enough. The pacing is nicely done, and I would enjoy reading another in the series. Fantasy, adventure, mystery. Good fun!

Side note: I only give 5 stars to books that were absolutely stellar, so there's certainly no disrespect intended with 4 stars. I really enjoyed and recommend this book. As 4 stars indicates on Goodreads, I "really liked it."

The description of the book doesn't do it justice, I think. I was thrown off initially by the description of the character waking up with no memory in a bathtub. But, it actually works. The character lives in a world like a video game simulation with magic. He's learning the rules, quickly, but there's certainly a sense of panic that he won't learn things fast enough. The pacing is nicely done, and I would enjoy reading another in the series. Fantasy, adventure, mystery. Good fun!

I examined the evidence of my hasty retreat to the bathroom while wondering why the furniture wasn’t crushed and burned as it so evidently had been in my involuntary memory. A black jacket that matched my soaked pants had been thrown over the chair. A pair of black leather shoes and a wallet lay on the floor next to it. I picked up the wallet. As I straightened up, a horned figure dressed in a dark brown business suit coat and tie appeared next to the bed in a puff of yellow-white smoke. He was naked from the waist, his goat-like legs covered with shaggy brown fur nearly identical in color to the suit jacket. He had a slim black briefcase clasped in his left hand.

“Ah, Mr. Coreman,” the demon said with a shark-like toothy-grin. “I’m glad to have caught you at home.”

I glanced at Miss Doolittle looking for some sort of sign that this sort of intrusion was to be expected.

“Mr. Sneed,” Miss Doolittle said, her voice cold. “If you need Mr. Coreman to sign papers, you really should make an appointment with me.”

Mr. Sneed turned towards Miss Doolittle, his toothy-grin still firmly attached to his face. “I apologize, Miss Doolittle,” he said, not sounding apologetic at all. “But given the state of Mr. Coreman’s account, this really can’t wait.”

Intrusion it was, and despite my standing there in soaking wet underwear, it didn’t look like Mr. Sneed was going to be put off. “Fine. What papers do I need to sign?”  (e)
